Sourdough Bread: Why Is Everyone Talking About It And Is It Worth The Hype?

You may have noticed a huge increase in the number of posts you’ve seen in the last year about sourdough bread.

It’s been a long-standing favourite for many due to its tangy flavour and crispy crust… toasted with salted butter, mmm, there’s nothing quite like it. With everyone having a little extra time on their hands to care and nourish their sourdough starters, it’s become a very instagrammable lockdown favourite.

So… What is sourdough?

Sourdough takes on the traditional method of baking bread. This method is traced back to ancient Egypt from around the year 1500 BC. The bread goes through a slow fermentation process and doesn’t use the baker’s yeast that we are used to today. It only requires flour, water, salt and the all-important live fermented culture known as the ‘sourdough starter’ which acts as a natural rising agent.

Why is it different from normal bread?
